Are you in a tizzy trying to get your child ready for back to school? New school supplies, backpacks, clothes, shoes, athletic gear… and the list goes on. While you’re at it, you don’t want to forget about the little things, like nutritious snacks (we almost did). Whether it’s for snack time, for packing in a lunchbox, or even fuel for after school, a weekly trip to Walmart makes it easy to stock up on healthy options for your kiddos.

My son starts school next week. He’s gotten a new backpack and already filled it with everything on his school supply list; and gotten a new pair of sneakers and a few new pieces of clothing, so he can start the year off fresh to death. He’s ready for his first day! … Or so we thought.
The other day during our weekly trip to Walmart, I realized that we forgot something. We’d been so busy buying all the school supplies and new clothes, while also trying to squeeze in some last minute summer memories, that we forgot about snacks and lunches.
For a second, I panicked. But then I was like, we’re already at Walmart so let’s just get stuff while we’re here. So we did!
As part of back to school shopping, I like to let my son have freedom as to his choices. I mean, he is the one going back to school, using the supplies, and the one eating the snacks.
At the same time, as a parent, I want to ensure he’s getting the nutrition he needs. So instead of heading straight to the chip and cracker aisles, we went to the granola/healthy snacks aisle. There, I gave him free reign to choose what he wanted.
Thinking he would pick out something like chocolate chip granola bars (simply because they have chocolate), he reached for a Sensible Portions Veggie Straws Variety Pack instead. I calmly told him that was a great choice, but inside I was jumping for joy because I know just how great an option Sensible Portions Veggie Straws are.
He loves them because of their crunch and taste. I love them because they’re made from vegetables, which my son obviously doesn’t realize (he hates veggies), and they have 30% less fat than the potato chips he’d usually choose.
Other reasons to love Sensible Portions Veggie Straws include the facts that they’re gluten-free, non-GMO, kosher, cholesterol-free and they have no added artificial flavors or preservatives.
This kid is headed back to school and back to nutrition. And not just him, but his whole class too! After he grabbed a Sensible Portions Veggie Straws Variety Pack for himself, he asked if he could get an extra one to share with his classmates.
My mom heart just melted. Last year we would randomly send him to school with extra snacks for his class to share. This year, he is well ahead of us.
While at Walmart, we also swung by the baby/toddler aisles and picked up some Strawberry Earth’s Best Organic® Sunny Day Snack Bars. They may be located in the baby section, but these bars a sweet snack the whole family can enjoy.
Sunny Day Snack Bars made with organic strawberries, enclosed in a wholesome wheat, oat, and corn flour crust. And since the bars are individually wrapped, they make packing lunches easy. According to my son, he eats his Earth’s Best Organic® Sunny Day Snack Bars as a “dessert” at lunch.
Little does he know, Earth’s Best Organic® Sunny Day Snack Bars are an excellent source of calcium, iron and zinc, they have no artificial flavors or colors and they’re also non-GMO. I’d say dessert has never been so healthy!
All in all, our routine trip to Walmart turned out to be a memory in the making. My son actually chose a healthy, vegetable-based option on his own? Usually I’m the one who grabs the Veggie Straws. There’s a first for everything, I guess.
And nutritious school snacks in the baby section? I’ll bet you never knew! I’m just glad Walmart never let’s me down when I’ve forgotten something, especially something as important as back to school fuel.
